ILOILO City – Some major thoroughfares will be closed to traffic due to a drainage system project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The Sangguniang Panlungsod approved an ordinance temporarily closing the General Luna Street – Jalandoni Street intersection for one month from April 26 to May 26, and the two lanes of Jalandoni Street (beside the University of San Agustin) from corner Delgado Street up to the corner of General Luna Street until the end of July 2017.

DPWH is working on a P100-million comprehensive drainage project that aims to solve the perennial flooding downtown.

Work on the drainage project actually covers four major streets – General Luna, Jalandoni, Rizal, and JM Basa. It promises to end the flooding on the streets of Fuentes, Mabini, Quezon and Valeria, among other areas in the city.

The outfall of the drainage system is the Iloilo River via Muelle Loney Street and back of the Iloilo Terminal Market.

The Transportation Management and Traffic Regulation Office (TMTRO) of the city government said there will be a traffic rerouting beginning next week.

Vehicles that used to take the General Luna – Jalandoni intersection may take the flyover.

According to TMTRO chief Robert Forster, Villa Baybay and Ungka ITGSI Diversion passenger jeepneys, when going back to their points of origins after reaching the City Proper, should take Mabini Street then proceed to General Luna Street.

Meanwhile, Jaro Liko NFA and La Paz jeepneys heading to the City Proper must take Delgado Street instead of Mabini Street./PN
