MANILA – Sen. Franklin Drilon is against bringing the Philippine National Police (PNP) back to the antidrug campaign.

Police will rejoin the crackdown against illegal drugs if the problem worsens, President Rodrigo Duterte said on Saturday.

In October the President declared that only the PDEA shall be authorized to swoop down on illegal drug suspects and barred other law enforcement agencies and units from doing the same.

His announcement came after Oplan Double Barrel – the intensified antidrug operations of the PNP – has resulted in thousands of deaths.

But a budget will be made available should Duterte allow the police to reengage in antidrug operations.

“There’s a lot of leeway in the budget iyong ganyang mga bagay,” said the Senate minority leader.

His opposition to the PNP-led drug war was due to the thousands of drug-related killings, the senator from Iloilo City stressed.

Among those killed were minors, said the senator.
