BACOLOD City – President Rodrigo Duterte appointed Hermenegildo Serafica as the new administrator of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA), according to Sugar Alliance of the Philippines (SAP) spokesperson Dino Yulo.

Yulo said Duterte fired Atty. Anna Rosario Paner as the SRA head, contrary to the reports that the latter tendered her resignation.

Yulo, who was also nominated as a member of the SRA board of directors, said they have yet to receive the official confirmation of Serafica’s appointment.

But he said it was a “welcome development.”

“We hope (Serafica’s) appointment will mark a new start for the SRA,” said Yulo.

The SAP is optimistic that the new appointment of the SRA’s head would mean that the sugar administration will continue to exist.

Earlier, the President had announced to abolish the SRA due to corruption, accusing Paner of paying consultants with “big amounts.”

Yulo also said the sugar industry stakeholders were “very much willing” to work with Serafica./PN
