MANILA – Rappler reporter Pia Ranada-Robles was banned from covering Malacañang because President Rodrigo Duterte was pissed at her, the presidential spokesman said.

Hindi lang pupwede magkaroon ngayon ng access sa Presidente dahil bwisit sa kanya ang Presidente,” Harry Roque told a radio interview on Wednesday.

There was no violation of press freedom in barring Ranada from the Palace, Roque stressed.

Lilinawan ko lang po: Bagaman hindi na siya pwedeng mag-cover sa Malacañang, pwede siyang magsulat kahit ano’ng gusto niyang isulatkahit puro fake news ’yan,” the spokesman said.

Kung kaligayahan niya ’yan, ituloy niya ’yan,” he pointed out.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) ruling to cancel the corporate registration of Rappler for alleged violation of the Constitution was a factor in Duterte’s decision, Roque said.

The SEC said Rappler violated the Foreign Equity Restrictions in Mass Media for allowing a foreign investor to have control over the company.

Rappler filed a petition asking the Court of Appeals to nullify the decision.

The appellate court has yet to decide on the petition.
