MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte is attending the opening of the 60th edition of the Palarong Pambansa on April 23 at the Binirayan Sports Complex in San Jose, Antique.
In the two-hour long opening ceremony, the President is expected to give a keynote speech.
“Nagsagawa na ng inspeksyon ‘yung mga PSG (Presidential Security Group) at Presidential Management Staff sa venue at confirmed na darating si President Duterte,” said Atty. Arthur Lastimoso, chairperson of the local organizing committee of the Palaro.
Five senators – Antiqueña Loren Legarda, Ilonggo Franklin Drilon, Bam Aquino, Manny Pacquiao, and Sonny Angara – will also attend the opening rites.
“May special request din daw si Presidente. Gusto niya kapag nagbibigay siya ng speech ay nasa harapan niya ang lahat ng atleta sa Palaro,” said Lastimoso.
The Palarong Pambansa is an annual multi-sporting event involving student-athletes from 18 regions of the Philippines and organized by the Department of Education.
The Palaro aims to promote physical education and sports as integral parts of basic education for the youth to become responsible and globally competitive citizens.
It also aims to inculcate in their minds the spirit of discipline, teamwork, excellence, fair play, solidarity, sportsmanship, and other inherent values, and promote and achieve peace through sports.
In addition, the Palaro targets to widen the bases for talent identification, selection, recruitment, training and exposure for elementary and secondary students to serve as athletes’ roster of the national sports associations for international competitions./PN
