ILOILO City – Today, President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to visit the wake of one of the soldiers killed in the April 11 armed encounter with the Abu Sayyaf in Bohol province.

According to Chief Inspector Aron Palamo, Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) spokesperson, they received a memorandum from the Philippine National Police headquarters instructing them to prepare for the presidential visit.

Duterte would pay tribute to Corporal Meljun Cajaban in Leon, Iloilo and offer his condolences to the family.

The body of Cajaban arrived in his family’s home on April 17.

The burial is scheduled on April 28.

On April 12, Malacañang paid tribute to Cajaban and three other government troops who lost their lives in the gun battle with Abu Sayyaf fighters in Bohol.

“One officer, two soldiers and a policeman paid the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their duty to serve and protect our people. They are true heroes,” said Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella.

He added: “We salute their gallantry as we also assure their families that they will be provided all the necessary assistance from the government.”

State forces exchanged gunfire with an Abu Sayyaf unit led by Abu Rami in Inabanga, Bohol far from the terrorists’ jungle bases in Mindanao.

The three other government casualties were 2nd Lieutenant Espelito Saldua Jr., Sergeant John Dexter Duero and Police Officer 2 Rey Anthony Nazareno.

Six terrorists, including Rami, were also killed in the hours-long clash./PN
