MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte said he would “shut up forever” about how business magnate Lucio Tan allegedly evades taxes.

This was after the Philippine Airlines (PAL) helped repatriate several overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Kuwait.

Duterte thanked PAL and Cebu Pacific for providing planes for the repatriated OFWs.

More than 100 Filipino workers who availed themselves of Kuwait’s amnesty program for undocumented and overstaying OFWs arrived in Manila on Tuesday.

“I want to say to Mr. Lucio Tan and Gokongwei family, on behalf of our countrymen, salamat po. And I will remember you for all time,” Duterte said in a speech.

“Because of this incident, Lucio Tan, I am going to shut up forever. Wala ka nang maririnig sa akin na salita na ’di ka nagbayad [ng taxes],” he added.

Last year Duterte warned Tan, PAL chairman and chief executive officer, to settle his “debts” with the government or the President would shut down Terminal 2 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Duterte also assured Tan he would not harass him if he does “the right thing.”

On Friday last week Duterte said he was willing to be in good terms with Tan if the latter sends planes for OFWs in Kuwait.

“Now kung gusto ni Lucio Tan na sweety-sweety kami edi magpadala siya ng limang eroplano doon. Pakatapos libre doon pa ako magkain sa kanya bukas ng gabi,” the President said at the time.

Each of the repatriates received P5,000 from the Department of Foreign Affairs, P5,000 from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, P5,000 from Duterte, and grocery bags./PN
