MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte has vowed to end the criminal and terrorist activities of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).
Duterte made the statement during his two-hour New Year Command Conference with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police.
“Idiniin ng Presidente na ‘yung kanyang commitment to end the ASG, ‘yung Abu Sayyaf Group,” Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said.
A report from the Australian National Security said that the ASG has at least 400 member-fighters in the country.
From the 1990s up to 2014, the Islamic militant group accounted for 340 terrorist incidents in the Philippines, according to the Global Terrorism Database of the United States National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism.
June last year, Canadian Robert Hall, held hostage in September 2015, was executed by the Al-Qaeda linked organization after ransom demands were not met.
They also beheaded Filipino hostage Patrick James Almodovar, 18, in August.
Meanwhile, Abella said the meeting, which he described as “substantial” and “very fruitful,” specifically focused on security update and the current law enforcement activities.
Duterte also restated his resolve to fight corruption, drugs and terrorism, the Malacañang official said./PN
