MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas relied on another endgame spurt to execute a 100-85 victory over Japan in the 2017 William Jones Cup on Tuesday at the Taipei Peace International Basketball Hall in Taipei, Taiwan.

The Philippine men’s basketball team struggled anew and was behind 72-73 early in the fourth quarter before launching a run on back-to-back triples by Matthew Wright and Carl Bryan Cruz for an 86-74 lead.

The Japanese team tried to mount a fight-back on their 3-point conversions but free throws from reinforcement Mike Myers, Kiefer Ravena and Jio Jalalon sealed the win for Gilas.

Filipino-German Christian Standhardinger led the way with double-double 22 points and 14 rebounds for Gilas, which has registered its third straight victory after losing the opening-day game.

Myers chipped in with double-double 17 points and 17 rebounds, while Matthew Wright contributed 15 points, on two triples, for Gilas, which will face the unbeaten South Korea today.

Gilas was up early in the match on hits by Kobe Paras but the Japanese leaned on their 3-point conversions to keep the match in a see-saw affair before the Philippines pulled away late in the game.

Yusei Suguira top-scored with 22 points, including five triples, while Leo Vendrame, Gen Hiraiwa and Shuta Hara each had 12 points for Japan, which suffered its fourth straight defeat./PN
