KALIBO, Aklan – The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) based in this capital town inspected buildings, commercial establishments, lodges, inns, and beer houses to make sure that they are complying with fire safety standards.

BFP personnel have done this prior to the Ati-Atihan Festival, which is seen to draw more people in Kalibo.

The new Municipal Fire Marshal Senior Inspector Sidjie Gerardo reiterated to his personnel that all establishments in the town must follow the safety requirements stated in Republic Act 9514, or the Fire Code of the Philippines.

Gerardo added that he will deploy fire trucks in strategic areas in the town during the week-long festival, which will start today.

The trucks will be on standby to respond to fire calls and emergencies, he said.

Fire officers also inspected the festivals sites, especially the exit doors.

Gerardo said exit doors must be marked and well-lighted to guide merrymakers in case of emergency.

Around 40 BFP personnel will also augment the security forces for Ati-Atihan.

Gerardo appealed to the public, especially revelers, to refrain from using firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices during the sadsad, or the street dancing.

Fireworks suppliers were also reminded to coordinate with the BFP to secure permits from the fire marshal and the police. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
