ILOILO City – During the sixth cycle of Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Supplementary Feeding Program (SFP) in Western Visayas last year, 131,741 children-beneficiaries were served.

According to DSWD Region 6 nutritionist Girl Ley Arroyo, 12,710 malnourished children improved their nutritional status.

The children also became attentive in their classes because they were well-nourished, she added.

The feeding program provides allots P15 for each child per day for 120 days. Of the amount, P11 is used for the viand and P4 for rice per child.

This year, the program targets 118,207 children in Western Visayas. They are those enrolled in child development centers or day care centers and aged two years to five years old.

The feeding program aims to improve the nutritional status of children through the provision of supplementary feeding in addition to regular meals.

Hot meals and alternative meals, which meet one-third of the Recommended Energy and Nutrient Intake (RENI) using indigenous food and locally produced food, are served to children during snack time, either in the morning or afternoon.

Arroyo said DSWD hopes to improve further the nutritional status of children and enhance the knowledge and skills of their parents in providing them healthy meals.

The program may start in June, she added. (PNA)
