MANILA – Far Eastern University Tamaraws kept its finals hopes alive after beating Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles 80-67 in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball semifinals.

Ron Dennison led the way for Tamaraws on Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum with 17 points. Arvin Tolentino added 13 while Hubert Cani and Cameroonian Prince Orizu chipped in 11 and 10, respectively.

As a result, Tamaraws forced a do-or-die game tomorrow at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Ateneo, on the other hand, needs only one victory to barge into the best-of-three finale with its twice-to-beat incentive.

Leading 38-35 at the half, FEU went on an offensive rampage in the third quarter behind Dennison, Cani and Orizu for a 59-48 edge.

Blue Eagles tried to catch up early in the final frame but Tamaraws quickly raised the lead to its largest 75-58 with hits from Tolentino, Cani and Richard Escoto, with 2:45 left in the game.

“Right now, we haven’t done anything yet. Ang nakuha lang namin is to take away the twice-to-beat advantage of Ateneo,” said FEU head coach Olsen Racela. “We are looking forward to Wednesday’s game. [We’ll] see what we can do and try to stop Ateneo.”

Ilonggo Thirdy Ravena led the way with 17 points and six rebounds while siblings Mike and Matt Nieto contributed 13 and 11, respectively, for Blue Eagles./PN
