KALIBO, Aklan – A film about a grieving Santo Niño devotee won the Golden Sarok trophy and the P25,000 grand prize in the 1st Ati-Atihan Sarok Short Film Festival.

“Antos Anak,” directed by Kim Janus Justo of Barangay Andagao, also won the cinematography, editing and directing plums. The awards were given in a ceremony on Feb. 17 at the Pastrana Park.

In “Antos Anak,” Jomil — who lost his wife and child to birthing complications — tries to cope by making wooden religious images of the Santo Niño and sell them on streets and outside the church.

Devotion to the Child Jesus was key to the survival of Jomil and brother-in-law Nestor, who blamed the protagonist for his sister’s death. Drug-using Nestor promised to turn his life around when he learned, after Jomil had a seizure, that the latter has a brain tumor.

Randy Nacuspag starred as Jomil and Leev Alvin Rogando as Nestor.

“Sa Ati-Atihan,” written and directed by Antonio Alis Jr., won the production design award. The film evolves on how Alex, a tourist; Mang Modesto, a street vendor; and Tonio, a resident, celebrated the festival.

Joseph Tayco won the best-actor award for his performance in “Panaad (Devotion),” directed by Manuel Garcia.

Tayco played a parlorista and Santo Niño devotee who, after his sister died of leukemia, parented his 10-year-old nephew Miko.

The protagonist’s faith was tested when Miko, played by John Paul Malicdem, was hurt in a road accident outside his school and hospitalized.

“The pioneer film entries were encouraged to visually portray our local heritage, language and arts,” said Sarok Short Film Festival director Romart Martesano.

He added: “The festival under the Tubas Pelikula Program is a creative opportunity for amateur Akeanon filmmakers and video enthusiasts to harness and promote prolific advancements in visual storytelling.”

Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. led the film festival in partnership with TuesdayWhat Productions, the local government of Kalibo, and the provincial government of Aklan.

Jurors included DT Joy Gener, Angelie Custodio, LB Morales, and Phillip Kimpo Jr. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
