MANILA – Foton Tornadoes climbed back from two sets down to score 19-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15 against Generika-Ayala Life Savers in the 2017 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference last night at the San Juan Arena.

Jaja Santiago led the way with 26 points on 21 attacks, five service aces and two blocks, for Tornadoes, which remained on top of Pool C with an unblemished 5-0 win-loss slate.

Ennajie Laure added 20 markers, on 18 attacks, one block and one service ace, for Foton, which also got a huge lift from veteran setter Rubie de Leon to overcome the deficit.

After losing the first two sets, Tornadoes started its climb in the third frame behind Heather Guino-o and Christine Joy Rosario for a 21-15 lead. Generika tried to catch up behind Ilongga Fiola Ceballos but Maika Ortiz ended the set with an attack.

Competition was tight early in the fourth set before Tornadoes pulled away 17-13 behind Santiago and Rosario. The lead stretched to 10 points on conversions by Santiago to force a fifth set.

Foton went on a strong start in the deciding set behind Santiago and Laure 12-4. Generika cut the deficit 14-7 but a hit by Ivy Perez completed Tornadoes’ come-from-behind win.

“This is still a long way to go,” said Tornadoes head coach Moro Branislav. “Jaja is still catching up with our training after joining the national team in Kazakhstan. So in the second round, I expect her to be at her best.”

With the defeat, Generika slipped to fourth place in the pool with a 2-3 win-loss slate and are in danger of not making it to the semifinals./PN
