ILOILO City – Iloilo governor Arthur Defensor Sr. was not really impressed with Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) director who was promoted to a position in Camp Crame.

Gentiles was replaced by Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag, the chief of the Firearms and Explosives Office of the Philippine National Police national headquarters in Quezon City.

“I think he (Gentiles) performed well, but I cannot say it was exceptional or outstanding,” Defensor told the press on Thursday in reaction to a Sangguniang Panlalawigan resolution commending Gentiles.

For Board member Domingo Oso (3rd District), proponent of the resolution, Gentiles led a “successful” antidrug campaign.

The governor was quick to downplay his own comment.

“Let us respect that opinion (of the Provincial Board). Indi ta lang na pagbaisan kay tapos na, waay man ta kwaon sina,” he said.

Gentiles, now a two-star general, was assigned to head the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations in Eastern Mindanao.

But Defensor was perceptibly optimistic about Binag, who paid a courtesy call at the governor’s office on May 16, a day after he officially assumed the PRO-6 directorship.

“I think he (Binag) is very professional. He can be very deliberate … profound,” said Defensor. “I hope with some confidence nga he will perform well kag ipakita niya ang extent sang iya responsibilidad.”

He was also impressed by Binag’s academic record and, based on what he has observed so far, believes Binag is honest and kind.

Indi sia haras-haras, indi man sia hambog,” said Defensor. “Let’s see. Let’s give him a chance, with a high sense of optimism.”

Defensor said he made it clear with Binag that Iloilo has “not relented in our fight against illegal drugs and illegal gambling.”

Sang pag-take over niya (Binag), he [told] me that he will do his job with a high sense of transparency and accountability,” the governor said. “I am very hopeful that he will stick to his commitment.”/PN
