MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas vented its ire on India in the William Jones Cup yesterday.

Matthew Wright led the 101-70 drubbing with 19 points – on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the 3-point line – in favor of the Philippine team at the Taipei Peace International Basketball Hall in Taipei, Taiwan.

Von Pessumal and Almond Vosotros had 14 points apiece, on a combined eight 3-point conversions, while Filipino-German Christian Standhardinger had 10 points for the Filipinos to improve to 5-3.

Gilas still has a chance to salvage a bronze medal if it defeats Iran tonight and South Korea splits its two matches.

The Philippines struggled early in the opening quarter and trailed 18-20. A basket by Mike Tolomia followed by back-to-back triples from Carl Bryan Cruz gave Gilas a 27-24 lead.

The Chot Reyes-mentored Gilas started to pull away in the second frame on 3-point conversions by Pessumal for a 34-24 lead. Conversions from Cruz, Pessumal and Kiefer Ravena increased the lead further 54-31 at the half.

Gilas widened the lead further in the second half with three straight triples from Wright to build its largest lead 96-61 on outside hits by Vosotros and Cruz.

Amjyot Singh Gill finished with 25 points while Jeevanatham Pandi chipped in with 14 points and 10 rebounds for India, which remained winless in eight matches./PN
