ILOILO City – The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings renewed its victory over the Meralco Bolts with an 83-72 win in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup on Saturday night at the University of San Agustin Gymnasium.
Joe Devance, who joined the league’s 5,000 points club, led the way with 19 hits and six rebounds for the Kings, which tied the Blackwater Elite and Phoenix Fuel Masters with a 4-4 win-loss slate.
LA Tenorio chipped in 18 markers, while Japeth Aguilar contributed double-double 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Kings, which faced the Bolts for the first time since their PBA Governor’s Cup finals encounter.
The Kings opened the match with a 5-0 lead behind Tenorio, but the Bolts quickly turned things around to snatch a 23-13 advantage on back-to-back conversions by Joseph Yeo.
The Kings opened the second frame with a 14-3 scoring run behind Tenorio, Aguilar and Devance to snatch a 28-26 edge. The Kings widened the lead to 39-32 but the Bolts scored eight unanswered points to surge ahead at halftime, 40-39.
The Kings waxed hot early in the third frame behind Devance and Mark Caguioa for a 56-48 advantage on a reverse basket by Kevin Ferrer. The Bolts then leaned on Chris Newsome to cut the deficit to 56-52.
However, the Kings went on another scoring run in the final frame for a 71-68 lead on six straight points by Devance. The Bolts cut it to single digits but the Kings responded with back-to-back hits from Aguilar for its largest lead at 79-65.
Negrense Reynel Hugnatan top-scored with 18 points, while Newsome and Baser Amer added 11 markers apiece for the Bolts, which has been eliminated from the quarterfinals race with its 2-7 record./PN
