MANILA – Jovelyn Gonzaga led Cignal HD Spikers to a 26-24, 25-23, 25-17 sweep against Iriga Lady Oragons in the Chooks to Go-Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center in Bulacan.

The native of Guimaras rediscovered her touch and made an impressive showing with 15 points – all from attacks – for HD Spikers to snap a two-game losing skid to improve to 2-3 after the Sunday match.

The explosion of Gonzaga, a national women’s volleyball team mainstay, was a welcome development for HD Spikers, which continued to miss the services of veteran Rachel Anne Daquis, who was nursing a bruised knee.

“We all know that we came from back-to-back losses so we wanted to come back stronger against Iriga,” said the former Central Philippine University Golden Lions standout.

“Rachel (Daquis) was not here, so I needed to step up,” she added. “We’re focusing more on our training and improving our weaknesses. I hope our streak continues.”

The victory was a huge boost for the PSL Invitational Cup champion heading to a crucial encounter with the still undefeated F2 Logistics Cargo Movers on Nov. 21.

“This was an overwhelming win for us,” said HD Spikers mentor George Pascua. “We hope to sustain the players’ winning character. We need to overcome the pressure because we’re a champion team in the Invitational.”

Serbian import Tamara Kmezic spewed fire offensively with 22 kills while Saama Miyagawa of Japan chipped in 14 points for Lady Oragons, which absorbed its third consecutive setback after winning its season debut./PN
