MANILA – The Senate inquiry into the government’s dengue immunization program aimed only to ferret out the truth about the use of the controversial dengue vaccine Dengvaxia, according to Richard Gordon.

Gordon was the chairman of the Blue Ribbon Committee that led the hearings last week.

The government spent P3.5 billion to purchase Dengvaxia for the immunization that the Department of Health suspended early this month in light of an advisory that the vaccine poses risks to those who have not been infected by the dengue virus.

More than 800,000 schoolchildren have been administered with Dengvaxia after its launch in the Philippines last year.

Gordon was criticized for allegedly monopolizing what was supposed to be a joint hearing with the Committee on Health.

“I wanted to draw out the truth because the health of the 830,000 people who were inoculated is paramount here,” he said.

“This is not a bridge, this is not a school. This is about the life and death of our children,” said Gordon. “That’s why I want to ensure that we establish what really transpired.”

After the hearings, the Blue Ribbon Committee will release a report on the officials who must be held accountable and the proposed legislation that will make sure any mistake will not be repeated, he said.

Kailangan malinaw kaya I was presenting a case. Since my staff has totally worked on the whole thing to get logic and rhyme reason to the investigation, I have to present a timeline, which is extremely difficult because it’s a long timeline,” said Gordon.

“We do our homework,” he added. “We presented the timeline to show how the offenses were committed. And napalabas ko iyong points na dapat mapalabas,” he said.

Among those who testified during the hearings were former Health secretaries Janette Garin and Paulyn Ubial, and former president Benigno Aquino III./PN
