MANILA – De La Salle University Green Archers turned to Ricci Rivero in the endgame to score 115-109 against National University Bulldogs in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball yesterday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The scores were tied at 106 when Rivero came up with 6 straight points for Green Archers to get ahead 112-107 with under a minute left after a conversion by Rashleigh Rivero.

Bulldogs tried to make a last push after an inside conversion by center Issa Gaye but free throws by Aljun Melecio and rookie Leonard Santillan sealed the win for Green Archers.

Ricci finished the match with 21 points – far better than his 3-point output against Far Eastern University Tamaraws last week – as Green Archers tied with Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles  (2-0) on top of the standings.

Melecio chipped in with 20 markers while Jollo Go came up with career-high 17 points for the defending champion, which played without Cameroonian import Benoit Mbala.

Both teams’ blazing start in the opening quarter resulted in a slim 31-29 lead by Green Archers. La Salle widened the lead to 8 in the second frame but a late run by Bulldogs cut the deficit 61-65 at the half.

NU had a strong start in the third canto behind rookie Jordan Bartlett to build an 11-point advantage. But Green Archers quickly erased this and surged 96-90 before Bulldogs made a run to tie the count at 106-all.

Bartlett top-scored with career-high 23 points, including two triples, while Rodolfo Alejandro added 18 markers for Bulldogs, which dropped to 1-1 along with Tamaraws and University of the Philippines Maroons./PN
