ILOILO City – When he meets the country’s governors on Thursday in Malacañang, President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to mince no words against those involved in illegal drugs like what he did during a meeting with mayors last week.

Western Visayas governors from the provinces of Iloilo, Antique, Aklan, Capiz, and Guimaras are attending, said Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) regional director Anthony Nuyda.

On Sunday during a speech before businessmen in Davao City, Duterte gave a preview of what he was going to tell the governors, especially those linked to drug trafficking.

“Huwag ka gyud magkumpiyansa sa akin…papatayin talaga kita. Believe me. Hahanapan kita ng ambush, lasunin kita (Do not be complacent with me…I will really kill you. Believe me. I will find you and ambush or I’ll poison you),” the President said.

Iloilo’s Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. said a memorandum from the DILG did not state the agenda of the meeting but he believed the campaign against illegal drugs would be brought up.

“Sabihin ko talaga sa kanila, ‘You tell your barangay captains, may supervisory powers kayo and iyong mga cities under you, iyong hindi pa chartered cities, you tell the mayors, reiterate to them,” the President said on Sunday at the annual installation of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

There are 81 governors in the Philippines.

The five Western Visayas governors would be staying at the Manila Hotel from where they would be picked up by vehicles to Malacañang.

“Most likely, the meeting will start at 2 p.m.,” said Defensor.

August last year, the President came out with an “honor list” of governors he claimed were performing well in curbing drug trafficking in their turfs. Defensor did not make it to the list but he did not mind it and congratulated those who did, including Negros Occidental’s Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr.

Defensor said he had no idea of the criteria but stressed: “I do what I’m supposed to do and I do not expect any recognition for whatever I’ve done.”

“If there is any recognition at all, it is purely incidental. I discharge my sworn duties as a public servant without any expectation of any recognition or reward,” he added.

Antique’s Gov. Rhodora Cadiao said she was looking forward to meeting the President.

The gathering of the governor “is the command of my commander,” she said.

Like Defensor, Cadiao expected illegal drugs to be the main agendum.

Siguro he is asking for our help already kay gasiling sya nga damo kuno barangay captains nga involve (in illegal drugs),” said Cadiao.

The other governors Duterte commended for their campaign against illegal drugs were Imee Marcos (Ilocos Norte), Faustino Dy III (Isabela), Junie Cua (Quirino), Jose Alvarez (Palawan), Eduardo Firmalo (Romblon), Edgardo Chatto (Bohol), Hilario Davide III (Cebu), Daisy Avance-Fuentes (South Cotabato), and Ma. Angelica Rosedell Amante-Matba (Agusan del Norte)./PN
