ILOILO City – Torrential rains and strong winds destroyed two houses and displaced five families in Barangay Navais, Mandurriao district.

The city was not under any storm signal on Saturday but tropical storm Odette that exited the country thru Northern Luzon enhanced the southwest monsoon.

According to Ronaldo Paclibar, barangay tanod of Navais, an acacia tree fell and crushed the two houses. The inhabitants were luckily unhurt.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, on the other hand, reported that three other families left their houses in Barangay Calubihan, Jaro district due to rising floodwaters.

Calubihan barangay captain Rammy Guintibano said Dungon Creek’s water level rose around 3 a.m. on Saturday, alarming residents.

As of noon yesterday, the water level had receded.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office was eyeing financial assistance to the two displaced families in Barangay Navais.

Meanwhile, most parts of the country would still experience rains due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affecting southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, state weather agency Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

The ITCZ will cause cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms over Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol, Mimaropa, western and central Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Tawi-Tawi, Sulu and Basilan.

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies and isolated rainshowers, mostly in the afternoon or in the evening, will prevail over the rest of the country.

Moderate to strong winds will prevail over the entire archipelago.

Luzon’s coastal waters will be moderate to rough, while the coastal waters around Visayas and Mindanao will be moderate to occasionally rough, said Pagasa. (PNA)
