MANILA – The impeachment complaint against President Rodrigo Duterte failed to get support from the minority in the House of Representatives.

House minority leader Danilo Suarez told the press in a briefing on Thursday they were against Duterte’s impeachment.

“As I’ve said before, I’m impressed with his performance as President, but I’m not impressed with his Cabinet,” Suarez said. “His trust and popularity rating is 80 percent. Why impeach him? He is doing [well].”

Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano filed the impeachment complaint.

Minority representatives all agreed to vote against the impeachment, Suarez stressed.

In filing the complaint before the Office of the Secretary General in the House in March, Alejano accused Duterte of culpable violation of the Constitution, bribery, betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption, and other crimes.

Among Duterte’s violations were the extrajudicial killings in the administration’s war on drugs, killings perpetrated by the Davao Death Squad, the 11,000 ghost employees in Davao City, and his unexplained wealth, Alejano said.

Weeks later Alejano filed a supplemental impeachment complaint against the President for allegedly allowing China to encroach the Philippines’ territories at the Panatag Shoal and Benham Rise.

House justice committee chairman Reynaldo Umali said the impeachment complaint was scheduled for deliberation next week.

“The impeachment complaint has already been referred to my committee,” Umali said in a separate interview. “We will start with the hearing perhaps on Monday or Tuesday next week to determine if it is sufficient in form and substance.”/PN
