MANILA – Preparing the public through drills is not enough to reduce casualties during earthquakes.

Structures like houses and buildings must be resilient enough, too, according to Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV.

Aquino is pushing for a periodic review of the resilience of such structures.

Earthquake mortality risks could be reduced if all structures comply with Building Code standards, the senator said.

“Earthquake drills help the community prepare for quakes but we must do more to reduce loss of lives,” said Aquino. “Dapat rin nating tingnan kung matibay at ligtas ba ang mga istruktura sa bansa.”

Earlier the Senate science and technology committee, which Aquino leads as chairman, held an inquiry into the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology’s capability to disseminate scientific data to allay fears and fight the prevalence of false information online regarding earthquakes.

Non-resilient structures and congestion in Metro Manila may contribute to high fatalities during an earthquake, Aquino said.

“We’ve already had 163 earthquakes this year,” he said. “Buhay ang nakasalalay. Kailangan nang tiyakin ang kaligtasan ng mga istruktura sa ating bansa upang maiwasan ang malawakang pinsala at kawalan ng buhay.”/PN
