FIRST STARTING out with four local “zines” by four up-and-coming Ilonggo writers last year, then as one of the events of the Magsugilanonay Kita: 2nd West Visayan Mother Tongue Children’s Books Summit, the Iloilo Zine Fest is evolving to become one of the biggest literary festivals in Western Visayas.

In celebration of “Buwan ng Wika” this August, Hubon Manunulat – a leading literary organization for the advancement of West Visayan literature – and independent publisher Kasingkasing Press are mounting the very first Iloilo Zine Fest today (Aug. 26) to Aug. 27 at the Robinson’s Place Iloilo Fountain Area, Corner De Leon & Quezon Streets, Iloilo City.

A zine – derived from magazine – is an independently self-published, small-circulation booklet, often created by a single person. They are also often “xeroxed” or photocopied folios or chapbooks.

Among the young writers set to hawk their zines are Palanca awardees Early Sol Gadong and Gil S. Montinola, cultural worker and filmmaker Allen Rivera Galindo, Kasingkasing Press founder Noel de Leon, poet Kristine Buenavista of Alima Community, and Ilonggo artist Kristoffer Brasileño.

Decorated Western Visayas writers Dr. Genevieve Asenjo, Dr. John Iremil Teodoro, and Palanca Hall-of-Famer Dr. Alice Tan Gonzales are also slated to launch their newest books on the first day of the festival.

Guest of honor is comic artist Manix Abrera of Kikomachine Komix fame, who is set to deliver an ArtTalk on storytelling and his craft.

Be part of the biggest zine festival in Western Visayas. Browse and buy the works of over 100 ziners as they showcase their self-published works. Support local writers and artists.

The event is free admission and open to all Ilonggos, for inquiries you may like the official ZineZoned: Iloilo Zine Fest Facebook page. The two-day event kicks off 9 a.m. today at the Robinson’s Place Iloilo Fountain Area. See you there!/PN
