BACOLOD City – The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) will look into the illegal importation of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in the country, according to SRA Board of Directors member Emilio Yulo III.

Yulo – who is also the spokesman of the Sugar Alliance of the Philippines – said the undocumented HFCS import was reported to them and that SRA head Hermenegildo Serafica wants it investigated.

“Being the representative of the sugar planters group, it is my responsibility to make sure our interest is protected,” said Yulo.

The entry of HFCS in the country has already manifested its negative effects in the sugar industry, Yulo added.

From its market value of P1,370 per 50-kilogram bag at the beginning of its milling season this year, the price of sugar dropped to P1,170 per 50-kilogram bag this month.

“It will be worse in the coming months when price of sugar reaches a very low price,” Yulo stressed.

Yulo also vowed to lobby to the Department of Agriculture and Department of Agrarian Reform the delivery of more support services for sugarcane farmers, especially those who are agrarian reform beneficiaries.

He said the farmers will be the “worst-hit sector” if the current sugar industry crisis heightens.

Meanwhile, National Federation of Sugarcane Workers regional head Roque Rillo criticized President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration over the deplorable state of the sugar industry and the agriculture sector as a whole.

Rillo warned of the full implementation of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade starting next year.

“We cannot not compete with other countries in terms of agricultural productivity because their governments provide substantial subsidy to their agriculture sector,” said Rillo./PN
