ILOILO City – The city government will offer free rides on Monday next week when transport groups in Panay Island stage a strike.

Vehicles will be provided by the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, City Engineer’s Office, Bureau of Fire Protection, Liga ng mga Barangay, and the Iloilo City Police Office.

“We have also instructed the president of the Liga ng mga Barangay to direct all barangay captains to use their patrol vehicles,” said City Administrator Hernando Galvez told a news conference on Friday.

Transport groups are protesting the planned phaseout of public utility vehicles 15 years and older and higher excise tax on oil.

Police vans, Iloilo City Emergency Response ambulances and dump trucks will also accommodate commuters.

Pickup points will be at the Mohon Terminal and Breakthough restaurant in Arevalo district, Tagbac terminal and Christ the King Memorial Park in Jaro, Hibao-an terminal in Mandurriao, Baldoza terminal in La Paz, and in Bo. Obrero in Lapuz, Galvez said.

Galvez appealed to the transport groups to hold the strike peacefully and provide standby vehicles in every district to be used for emergencies.

Transport group leaders advised companies and schools to suspend work and classes.

As of Friday, no class suspensions for Monday have been announced.

City hall employees must report despite the transport strike, Galvez stressed.

Meanwhile all municipal mayors in Iloilo province were also directed to facilitate the transport of commuters during the strike.

“You are hereby advised to provide transportation for your constituents who will be affected by the strike,” Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, now acting governor, said in Executive Order No. 044./PN
