ILOILO City – It is that time of the year when flower vendors are the busiest. Flowers are the most common gift during Valentine’s Day.

Vendors in Iloilo City have recorded an increase in sales compared to last year. They said more inquiries were made days before the special day.

“This year, there were more people inquiring or calling for reservations to avail themselves of delivery services ahead of time,” Salinor Nain, a flower vendor for 16 years, said.

She further explained that last year’s sales were “not that good” despite the fact that Valentine’s Day fell on a weekend.

“Last year’s sale was not that good because there were a lot of extra bouquets left. Valentine’s was on a weekend and most of our customers if not students were office workers so we didn’t have a good sale,” she added.

Nain said one dozen of roses costs P1,500, half dozen is worth P750 while their three-rose bouquet costs P400. A long-stemmed rose is priced at P100.

“It [prices of flowers] didn’t change. Our prices last year and this year are the same,” she said.

Some flower shops also offered free add-ons as part of their Valentine’s Day promo.

Arlene Acosta, an owner of a 10-year-old flower shop, said they offered balloons for their clients ordering bouquets worth P2,000.

“There are people who’d like to customize their bouquets. They buy their chocolates and we’re the one responsible to sort it out on the setting. We allow pickups and delivery within the city,” Acosta explained.

Acosta further emphasized that there’s a huge difference in their sales this year.

“The older our shop gets, the number of our customers escalate,” she said, adding that they also increased the prices of their flowers.

Acosta, who also sells rare Ecuadorian flowers, imports flowers from Baguio and China./PN
