ILOILO City – This city’s hosting of three Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meetings went without any hitch, according to the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).
Nothing adverse happened to the delegates, stressed Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson.
“We really appreciate the cooperation of everybody,” he said.
The three ASEAN meetings held at the Iloilo Convention Center were the following:
* 22nd Senior Officials Committee for the ASCC (SOCA) Meeting from March 6 to 9
* 17th ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council (ASCC) Meeting from March 6 to 9, and
* 3rd ASEAN – Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Good Regulatory Practice Network Meeting from March 14 to 16.
Gorero said the police achieved its target of “zero major incidents on the delegates.”
He also played down the abduction of a couple just a few blocks away from the Iloilo Convention Center on March 6 as an “isolated case.” He said it was not related to the ASEAN meeting.
“We did not promise a crime-free city because we can’t read the minds of people,” said the defensive Gorero.
Before the start of the ASEAN meetings, Gorero said it was the police’s goal to keep the city free from “major crimes” for the duration of the gatherings.
Following the abduction, however, he said the “major crimes” he spoke about referred to those that could possibly happen to ASEAN delegates only./PN
