Ilonggos survive Negros threat with 165 golds

NEGROS Occidental was a big threat but it failed to keep Iloilo from dominating the 2018 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet in Iloilo City.

A partial medal tally as of 7 p.m. on Thursday showed that the Ilonggos were way ahead with 165 gold, 122 silver and 102 bronze medals (64-52-43 in elementary and 101-70-59 in secondary), while Negros was on second place with 127-125-136 (64-55-38, 63-70-53).

On third place was Aklan with 37-37-83 (7-15-26, 30-22-57), while Capiz was fourth with 26-38-58 (11-18-26, 15-20-32). Guimaras followed 8-16-52 (6-5-26, 2-11-26) and Antique 6-27-41 (2-7-14, 4-20-27).

The regional tournament formally closed on Thursday at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

Sports Development Officer IV Ray Cabarles of the Iloilo provincial government said the Department of Education Region 6 decided to end it a day earlier than scheduled, with most of the events over.

Results from a few events have yet to come in as of press time.

Iloilo’s Vince Jason Buhayan added three more gold medals to his collection in secondary boys 400m, 200m dash, and 4x400m relay with Noren Lacheca, Glen delos Santos and Kennard Reyne Alarba.

Annie Rose Mercurio captured gold in secondary girls 200m dash, and 4x100m relay with Alexie Mae Caimoso Brooks, Berna Luz Talaron and Angeline Ortiz.

Iloilo also had three golds in volleyball – elementary boys and girls, and secondary boys. Its secondary girls team settled for a runner-up finish next to Negros Occidental.

Iloilo performed well in secondary badminton, too, with 1-2 finishes by Reignhart Gaan and Kervin Llanes in boys singles, and Dianne Flores and Marie Belen in girls singles.

Meanwhile Negros Occidental had a number of golds in badminton from Erlind and Eli Degala (boys doubles), Ellana Tan and Mia Mangilimotan (girls doubles), Magilimotan and John Valenzuela (mixed doubles), Cody Torres, Clarence Villaflor, Sean de Jesus, and Valenzuela (team tie boys) and Mangilimotan, Tan, Pamela Lopez, and Loren Sumugat (team tie girls).
