Rene Catalan pummels Peng Xue Wen during their ONE Championship: Kings of Courage encounter on Saturday night, Jan. 20 in Jakarta, Indonesia. ONE CHAMPIONSHIP

MANILA – Iloilo City native Rene Catalan posted another victory after defeating Peng Xue Wen of China via second-round technical knockout in ONE Championship: Kings of Courage in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Catalan (4-2) hopes to land a shot at a ONE FC world championship this year after the Saturday night fight.

“I am exerting a tremendous amount of effort in training. I want to keep on winning,” Catalan said. “My goal is to compete for the ONE Strawweight World Championship.”

Catalan had a strong start landing big hooks and head kicks before unloading well-placed uppercuts and leg kicks. Peng, however, managed to hang on at the end of the opening round.

Peng nearly finished off Catalan with a triangle choke in the second round but the Filipino freed himself from submission and unloaded a ground and pound to beat the Chinese fighter (1-2).

“I really hope ONE Championship will give me an opportunity to vie for the title in the future,” said Catalan, 39. “This win might be the door to a world title contest. Let us all hope for the best.”/PN
