MANILA – Kenneth Tuzon scored on a marginal goal as the University of Santo Tomas Tigers notched a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Far Eastern University Tamaraws in the UAAP Season 79 men’s football tournament on Sunday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

A native of Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, Tuzon scored his first goal of the season from a set piece in the 89th minute to power the Tigers to victory and claim the fourth semifinals seat.

The victory of the Marjo Allado-mentored Tigers, which ended the elimination round with 20 points, has also eliminated the Tamaraws and the National University Bulldogs, which is at fifth with 16 points.

“We have lapses in the game,” said the Ilonggo Allado. “Pero ang pinaka-importante dito ay naka-goal kami at naka-three points. We have to address our deficiencies in our next game.”

The Tamaraws opened the scoring in the 24th minute courtesy of Mark Arranguez before Renz Gumban’s third goal of the season 11 minutes later forced the equalizer for the Tigers.

Meanwhile, the Ateneo Blue Eagles clinched the top ranking in the Final Four while bundling out fierce rival De La Salle University Green Archers out of contention with a 2-0 victory.

Julian Roxas’ 38th minute screamer and a stoppage time goal by rookie Sam Lim were enough for the Blue Eagles to regain their winning ways while showing the Green Archers the exit door.

The victory put the Blue Eagles firmly ahead on top with 32 points. The Green Archers, meanwhile, ended a streak of four straight Final Four appearances as it stayed in sixth place./PN
