MANILA – Edgardo Alejan spearheaded the Philippines’ 4×400-meter relay team to win a gold medal in the 2017 Thailand Open Track and Field Championship 2017 at Thammasat University Sport Complex in Thailand.

The Pototan, Iloilo-native Alejan, along with Michael del Prado, Joan Caido and Archard Christian Bagsit, submitted 11.70 seconds to win the gold medal over campaigners from South Korea and Thailand on Thursday.

“We were satisfied with our performance considering that this was just the first time for the four of us to compete as a team,” Bagsit said in an interview with DzSR Sports Radio 918 AM.

Mary Harry Diones also contributed a gold medal for the Philippine contingent with his 16.13-meter effort, beating the bet from Thailand and the Philippines’ Rone Maglipay who had 15.85 meters.

“I think my performance is a little subpar,” said Diones, whose personal record was 16.70 meters. “I have a hard time adjusting to the climate here in Thailand. But I am still thankful that I won the gold.”

Ariel Toledo, meanwhile, broke the Philippine record in men’s decathlon with his 7,127 points. The previous record of 7,069 was done by Ramil Cid during the 2015 Philippine National Games.

However, Toledo’s performance was only good for a silver medal finish in the competition as his total was way beyond the 7,587 points tallied by the gold medallist from Thailand.

Other Filipino athletes who have won a medal in the competition are Janry Ubas, who won a gold in the men’s long jump event, and Patrick Unso, bronze medallist in the 110 meter hurdles./PN
