ILOILO City – An improvised explosive device (IED) was found yesterday in a grassy area in Barangay Bagacay, Alimodian, Iloilo.

The Alimodian police station believes the IED was planted by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels targeting police officers and soldiers.

An unidentified caller informed the municipal police about the IED around 8 a.m., said Senior Inspector Ramon Coreana, Alimodian police chief.

The battery-operated improvised explosive was in the form of a milk can.

Attached to a coconut tree via a long wire, the device was 8 inches tall, 6.5 inches in diameter and weighing around 7 kilograms, police said.

The Explosives and Ordnance Division of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office detonated the IED.

According to Coreana, everyone and everything within a 150-meter radius from the IED would have been killed and destroyed had it detonated in a public area.

Rebels could be behind the IED, Coreana said.

“I believe the bomb was intended for police officers and soldiers who pursued the rebels after their raid of the police station in Maasin town,” he said.

The IED was found six days after NPA rebels barged into the Maasin police station, subdued officers and took firearms.

On June 16, two days before the Maasin raid, police in Alimodian put up a checkpoint near where the IED was found, said Coreana.

Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, IPPO director, also believe the rebels planted the IED.

Tayaba advised all police officers in “high-risk areas” to be alert against the NPA.

They should keep coordinating with barangay officials and the community for intelligence information, he said.

“Do not leave the police station unmanned.  Do not relax,” Tayaba stressed./PN
