ILOILO City – The informant who helped the police arrest murder suspect Arturo Balume Sr. received his monetary reward yesterday.

The informant was a man from the 5th District of Iloilo province and a former member of the Balume group linked to robberies, gun-for-hire activities and drug trafficking in northern Iloilo, Capiz and Negros Occidental provinces.

He got the P100,000 reward at the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) in Santa Barbara town.

The reward was from the local government of Sara, Iloilo.

Balume, a resident of Barangay Bato, Sara, was arrested on Oct. 12, 2017 in Barangay Poblacion, Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental.

According to Sara municipal treasurer Mary Joy Abellar, the reward was sourced from the town’s peace and order fund.

“As a former member of the Balume group, he had an idea of Balume’s rendezvous,” said IPPO director Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba.

The informant’s identity would remain confidential “for security reasons,” stressed Tayaba.

Also arrested with the 62-year-old Balume were his wife Honey Grace, son Arturo Jr., 27 and spouse Pamela, 23, and the latter’s brother Ryan Cainglet, 29.

Balume was a suspect in an ambush in Balasan town on the eve of the May 2016 elections. Two supporters of a mayoral candidate in Concepcion town died.

His group was also believed to have ties with slain suspected drug lord Melvin Odicta Sr.

Seized from Balume and companions during their arrest were 10 sachets of shabu worth P83,000, a .38 revolver and a .45 Colt pistol .

Tayaba said Balume and companions have been charged with violating Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act) and Republic Act 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002) after their arrest./PN
