ILOILO City – The inaugural 2017 Capiz International Triathlon revs up today in Roxas City as “the seafood capital of the Philippines” is set to transform into a contentious arena for at least 300 triathletes from all over the country, even abroad, for the province’s fresh foray as a rising sports and adventure hub.

Part of the Capiztahan festivities – a weeklong festival commemorating the 116th foundation anniversary of the civil government of Capiz, TriAksyon participants are set to converge in Roxas City today for the preliminary briefings, as well as race conditioning and familiarization.

The official race kicks off with the gunstart on Sunday 6 a.m. at the People’s Park in Brgy. Baybay, along the province’s sprawling beach.

“TriAksyon is expected to draw [crowds] and attract more tourist arrivals as well as boost our local economy,” said Capiz governor Tony del Rosario.

The triathlon course is set to take triathletes on an arduous journey that passes by numerous Capiz landmarks and tourist destinations, heritage site Sta. Monica Parish Church (that houses the biggest bell in Asia) in Panay town and the city’s new development area Pueblo de Panay, among them.

Participants are also expected to take a plunge in Capiz’s bountiful waters, with a 1.5-km swim from the People’s Park to Mantalinga Island and back.

Aside from being the swimming area, Roxas City’s Baybay Beach – which boasts a 7.5-km shoreline – will also serve as a viewing area for those who wish to witness the historic event.

Meanwhile, Philippine swimming icon Betsy Medalla is set to lead the pack of sports enthusiasts slated to join the inaugural affair. Medalla, who traces her roots to Dumalag, Capiz, led the official announcement and launch of TriAksyon in Jan. 27.

Medalla is the first Asian to cross the icy waters of Cape Town (a port city on South Africa’s southwest coast) and complete the Robben Island Channel, also in South Africa.

TriAksyon has three main events: individual categories Standard Distance (1.5km swim, 54km bike, 12km run) and Sprint Distance (750m swim, 22km bike, 6km run), as well as Relay Distance (1.5km swim, 54km bike, 12km run) which can be joined by teams of three, each participant tackling just one of the stages of the competition.

There are also TriKids events with the following courses: 6 years and below (100m swim, 300m bike, 300m run); 7 to 8 years (200m swim, 500m bike, 500m run); 9 to 10 years (300m swim, 1km bike, 1km run); 11 to 13 years (300m swim, 2km bike, 2km run) and 14 to 16 years (500m swim, 3km bike, 3km run).

Among TriAksyon’s notable contenders are 2015 Sea Games gold medalist Nikko Huelgas, elite triathlete and model Kim Kilgroe, and professional sportswoman Monica Torres./PN
