ILOILO City – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog wanted more policemen to secure city hall following the arrest of three suspected members of the Maute terrorist group from Marawi City at the port of Iloilo.

“Although we have security guards, we will add policemen to ensure the security of all people with transactions here,” said Mabilog.

The Maute suspects were caught on Sunday just two days after the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) conducted an exercise simulating a terror attack.

It also came just hours after the New People’s Army (NPA) raided the police station in Maasin, Iloilo some 30 kilometers from this city.

Mabilog placed the city on full red alert status. He said he would leave it to the City Hall Detachment Commander to determine how many more police officers were needed.

The mayor was also open to the possibility of subjecting people entering city hall to frisking.

He directed all barangay councils, too, to strengthen their intelligence-gathering capability.

“Our barangay captains should utilize their tanods to enhance their intelligence network,” said Mabilog.

Before the full red alert status was declared, Mabilog consulted with Police Regional Office 6 director Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag and Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) director Senior Superintendent Remus Zacharias Canieso.

“We will continuously monitor people entering the city,” said Mabilog. “It’s better to be prepared than sorry.”

What happened in Maasin, Iloilo was a wakeup call, he said.

On June 15, Canieso briefed the city council and barangays officials about ICPO’s anti-terrorism and anti-criminality preparations.

“Our coastal barangay intelligence network is our frontline. It monitors the situation on our coasts and report to us suspect activities,” said Canieso.

Of Iloilo City’s 180 barangays, over 20 are coastal villages, according to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

These could be the entry points of terrorists, said Canieso.

Dapat i-target harden nila ang ila barangay. Indi nila pagpasudlon suspicious nga tawo.  The information we get from the barangays is very important,” he stressed. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
