MANILA – Greg Slaughter heaved a sigh of relief as his teammates wielded Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings to an 86-76 Game 2 win over Meralco Bolts in the PBA Governors’ Cup finals on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The 7-foot Slaughter – the Governors’ Cup Best Player of the Conference – struggled offensively as he was held to just 3 points, six rebounds and three blocks.

It has been believed – and has happened several times – in the PBA that a player puts up a lethargic performance moments after capturing the top individual award.

“We got another win. That’s what we’re looking to do. We’re up 2-0 so we’ll look to get one more on Wednesday,” said Slaughter, 29.

With or without the individual award, “we want to win the championship,” he added. “That’s just been our goal since the beginning.”

Slaughter, a former PBA Rookie of the Year, said he managed to contribute in other departments of the game despite his poor performance.

“It’s just how the game went,” said the former Ateneo Blue Eagles center. “But I was still able to contribute on the defensive end. It’s not about any numbers. It’s just about getting the win for the team.”

“It’s just that some people had their thing going, and that’s just how the game went,” he added. “When you’re on the court, no matter what the stats are, you just got to find a way to contribute to the team.”

Kings, the defending champion, is looking to post a pivotal 3-0 advantage when the finals series resumes tomorrow night./PN
