BACOLOD City – The fire that struck their house on Block 1, Eufemia Subdivision in Barangay Taculing around 4:15 a.m. on Wednesday killed an 18-year-old student of a maritime college.
Jason Hontiveros was studying at the John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation – Bacolod, Inc. in Barangay Alijis, Police Station 6 commander Chief Inspector Jovil Sedel said.
Hontiveros died of suffocation, police said.
An overcharging cellphone plugged in an outlet in the kitchen triggered the blaze, said Senior Fire Officer 2 Archie Espano, arson investigator.
When the fire broke out, Hontiveros tried to leave his room near their kitchen but failed upon meeting a volume of smoke, investigation showed.
Police identified the victim’s parents as Jerry and Teresa Hontiveros.
Investigators pegged the cost of damage at P100,000./PN
