ILOILO City – A village councilman faces a string of criminal charges for disarming and shooting a security guard of a pawnshop in Barangay Poblacion, San Rafael, Iloilo yesterday.

The San Rafael police station will be charging Rolando Ganzon, 46, of illegal gun possession while security guard Ronnie Santianes, 40, will haul the suspect to court for frustrated murder and assault.

Ganzon was a barangay councilman of San Florentino, San Rafael. Around 11:40 a.m. he angrily entered Palawan Pawnshop, disarmed then shot Santianes, said Senior Police Officer 4 Rey Buenavista, San Rafael police chief.

Santianes was hit on the chest but still managed to wrest his gun, a .38 revolver, from Ganzon. He was also able to seize the barangay councilman’s gun, a homemade 12-gauge shotgun.

Policemen were alerted. Santianes, a resident of Barangay San Lucas, Barotac Viejo town, was taken to the Western Visayas Medical Center in Iloilo City.

Ganzon, on the other hand, was taken to the Don Jose S. Monfort Medical Center Extension Hospital in Barotac Nuevo town. He hurt his head on the floor of the pawnshop during the grappling with Santianes for the security guard’s gun.

As of this writing, Ganzon was still confined at the hospital under tight police monitoring.

The shooting was captured by the closed-circuit television camera of Palawan Pawnshop, said Buenavista. From what the San Rafael police gathered, minutes prior to the shooting, Ganzon’s friend and Sangguniang Bayan member Roger Ruto dropped by Palawan Pawnshop.

Ruto was smoking and Santianes reminded him this was not allowed inside the pawnshop, said Buenavista.

“I believe an offended Ruto called up Ganzon and told the barangay councilman what happened, and this was why Ganzon angrily went to the pawnshop,” said Buenavista.

Santanies turned over to the San Rafael police station his .38 revolver and the homemade 12-gauge shotgun seized from Ganzon./PN
