KALIBO, Aklan – The Kalibo International Airport (KIA) took in 94 percent of international inbound flights in Western Visayas and Negros Occidental in 2016, while accounting for roughly 21 percent of domestic flights.

The KIA posted 6,908 domestic flights from Manila and Cebu, and 4,634 direct regional flights from Singapore, Incheon (South Korea), Hong Kong, Taipei (Taiwan), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and China — a combined 11,542 inbound flights.

The Bacolod-Silay Airport posted 11,466 domestic inbound flights, while the Iloilo International Airport had 285 international flights and 10,058 domestic flights, data from the Department of Tourism showed.

Another airport in Aklan — the Godofredo P. Ramos Airport (Caticlan airport) in Malay town — had 3,600 domestic flights from Cebu and Manila, while the Roxas Airport in Capiz had 1,460 domestic inbound flights, also from Manila and Cebu.

The Caticlan Airport was expected to improve its local passenger traffic with increased flights of airline companies.

It can now handle bigger aircrafts and thus allow tourists from Manila and Cebu to fly to Boracay Island without passing through Kalibo. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
