MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings was keeping its championship roster heading into the new PBA season by renewing the contracts of five veterans led by Joe Devance.

Devance, who was set to miss a number of games in the Philippine Cup due to surgery, signed a one-year extension, according to head coach Tim Cone.

“The only thing that concerns us right now is the injury on Joe,” said Cone. “He finally had a much needed surgery after three years so we expect him to be better after his recovery period.”

Veterans Arthur Dela Cruz, Jervy Cruz, Raymond Aguilar, and Raymon Jammer Jamito and rookie Anton Manuel also signed new contracts.

Dela Cruz has yet to see action for Kings since being traded from Blackwater Elite in August, while Cruz, Aguilar and Jamito were offered one-year extensions as well. Manuel was signed to a one-year rookie deal.

Two players – veteran John Wilson and rookie Mikey Cabahug – were still trying out for the remaining slot in Kings’ 15-man lineup, Cone said.

“From being injured, thankful ako na two years binigay na contract extension sa akin ng Ginebra,” Dela Cruz said. “I’ll try my best na hindi nila pagsisihan iyong risk na t-in-ake nila.”

“Slowly, but surely, I’ll try my best na ma-earn iyong trust ni coach Tim,” he added. “Right now, we’ll be practicing twice a day para makuha ko iyong rhythm ko and also iyong plays, executions niya.”/PN
