MANILA – The De La Salle University Lady Spikers has tempered the expectation of their fans in the upcoming UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball season following the departure of some key players from its championship lineup last year.
Lady Spikers head coach Ramil de Jesus said that, aside from the loss of their graduate star players, they also expect to encounter teams that have toughen up during the off-season.
Gone from this year’s lineup for the Lady Spikers are Ara Galang, Mika Reyes, Cyd Demecillo and Carol Cervesa and Negrense Christine Joy Soyud, who has transferred to Adamson Lady Falcons.
De Jesus added that the heavily-favored teams in the upcoming season are the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses, National University Lady Bulldogs and Ateneo Lady Eagles.
“All of them will pose as our biggest problem,” said De Jesus. “We set this level of game so other teams were catching up. Now they reached this level and it’s our turn to catch up.”
“We lost many players, it’s hard to match the character of Mika and Ara inside the court,” said De Jesus. “Hopefully we reach at least 70 percent of our movements from last year. We will try to reach their level but I still don’t know when.”
Set to return for the Lady Spikers are Kim Fajardo, Kim Dy, Mary Joy Baron, Ernestine Tiamzon, Dawn Macandili, Desiree Cheng, May Luna, Norielle Ipac, and Ilongga Aduke Ogunsaya./PN
