BACOLOD City – A fight between her present and former lovers led to the death of a 27-year-old woman in Purok Medalla Milagrosa, Barangay Sum-ag.
Maricar Marañon, a resident of Barangay Poblacion, Bago City, Negros Occidental, died of gunshot wounds on the neck, head and chest.
Marañon and live-in partner Melchor Flores, 48, were sleeping in a house they were renting in Sum-ag when her former live-in partner Jose Rommel Jolito, 43, barged in and confronted them around 11 p.m. on Sunday.
The two men grappled for Jolito’s firearm of a still undetermined caliber, leading to the weapon’s discharge, police investigation showed.
Marañon was hit. She was declared dead at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, the police said.
Flores is a native of Roxas City, Capiz. He is a small-time businessman going to Cebu and other parts of Visayas to peddle goods. He was injured, too.
Jolito, a resident of Barangay Pacol, Bago City, has a wife and two children. He and Marañon also have a child, who is now with Jolito’s mother, police said.
Investigation showed Jolito, who was hooked to cockfighting, was hitting and starving Marañon, prompting the latter to leave. Marañon later met Flores.
Jolito and a companion went to Barangay Sum-ag on board a motorcycle. He left his motorcycle and took a tricycle to Marañon and Flores’ house, police said.
Jolito fled after the incident. While at large as of this writing, he is facing murder and frustrated murder charges. Police launched a manhunt against him./PN
