BACOLOD City – The Negros Island Region (NIR) has a 90.81 percent drug affectation. But this can drop, according to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

Sixty-five barangays in the NIR are now being validated for a possible declaration of being drug- free.

These figures came from 154 barangays being subjected for drug clearing – 100 from Negros Occidental while 54 from Negros Oriental – said Atty. Roselyn Borja, director of PDEA in the NIR.

NIR has a total of 1,219 barangays, of which 1107 are classified as “affected” and 112 “unaffected” by illegal drugs, said Borja.

If the pending 154 are cleared, it will be reduced to 78 percent, she said.

According to Borja, in the old Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) regulation it is only the Philippine National Police (PNP) that can declare a community drug-cleared.
“But under the new issuance of the DDB, regulation series of 2017, once the PNP has declared a barangay  clean of illegal drugs, that has to be attested by the city / municipal anti-drug abuse council and it has to be validated by PDEA,” she said.
It is only after validation that the oversight committee will assess and evaluate again if that barangay will be declared as drug cleared, clarified Borja. (PIA-6/PN)
