ILOILO City – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog on Saturday recognized Ken Bono and Anjo Caram of the Meralco Bolts and Juan Paolo Taha of the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings for making their fellow Ilonggos proud.
The three players were each given a plaque of recognition during the halftime break of the Kings-Bolts matchup in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup on Saturday night at the University of San Agustin Gymnasium.
The 32-year-old Bono first played for the Iloilo Central Commercial High School before he was recruited to play for the Adamson University Falcons in the UAAP, where he won the UAAP MVP plum in 2006.
While playing for the Falcons, Bono also suited up for Montana Pawnshop and Cebuana Lhullier in the Philippine Basketball League. He’s also played as an import for the Bangkok Cobras in the Asean Basketball League.
In 2007, he was drafted sixth overall by the Alaska Aces. He has suited up for PBA teams San Miguel Beermen, Coca Cola Tigers, Barako Bull Energy, Star Hotshots and finally with the Bolts.
The 26-year-old Caram, meanwhile, first suited for the St. Joseph’s School before he was brought to Manila to play for the San Beda Red Lions in the NCAA. During his four-year stint, the Red Lions won three NCAA titles.
Caram was drafted 26th overall by the Bolts during the 2013 PBA Rookie Draft. He started his career as a reserve before slowly earning his minutes and is now a second stringer for coach Norman Black.
Taha, an Ilonggo-Arabian, started to make a name for himself while playing for the College of St. Benilde Blazers in the NCAA. He later suited up for Boracay Rum in the PBA D-League.
Taha was drafted by the Mahindra Floodbuster in the 2014 PBA Rookie Draft but was signed as a free agent by the GlobalPort Batang Pier. He was then traded to Floodbuster before becoming a King during the offseason.
Other Ilonggos who are strutting their wares in the league are Ronald Tubid of the Beermen, Emman Monfort of the NLEX Road Warriors and Billy Ray Roble of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters./PN
