SAN JOSE, Antique – The Malandog River Rehabilitation and Development Project was launched recently.

Antiqueña senator Loren Legarda led the river project’s launch in Hamtic, Antique.

She said the river project was allotted an initial budget of P40 million under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) fund.

Legarda added that she and Environment secretary Roy Cimatu are on “all out support” to rehabilitate and develop the “historic” river.

She said the cleanliness of the river must be maintained under Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.

More mangroves must be planted in the river, she stressed.

The DENR is the implementing agency of the river rehabilitation and development project. It has already tapped various national agencies and local government units to carry out the project.

The P40-million project budget will be used for assessment, profiling and characterization of Malandog River, expansion and strengthening of Adopt an Estero/River Program, and preparation for the comprehensive rehabilitation and development plan, eco-tourism development plan, and communication education and public awareness campaign, among others.

The Department of Public Work and Highways is coming up  with the master plan of the river project.

The DENR will also conduct consultations with the residents and local officials to cater to their concerns regarding the river development.

Legarda wants the Malandog River to become a tourist destination with a sustainable program that will both benefit the people and the environment. (With report from Pilar Mabaquiao/PIA/PN)
