BORACAY – Materials recovery facilities (MRFs) in barangays Balabag and Yapak will be reactivated.

The local government of Malay seeks to alleviate the garbage problem in the island resort, according to Sangguniang Bayan member Nenette Graf, chairwoman of the committee on environment.

Currently only the centralized MRF in Barangay Manoc-manoc is active.

Graf believes reviving the MRFs in Balabag and Yapak will fast-track the hauling of garbage and residual waste from the centralized MRF in Manoc-manoc to the sanitary landfill in the mainland.

In light of complaints against the foul odor emanating from the Manoc-manoc MRF and the health risks it poses, the local government was ordered to transfer the garbage and residual wastes from there.

Workers spray on the garbage and residual wastes up for hauling a white organic powder to lessen their foul odor.

Some hauling operators allowed the use of their barges to hasten the transport of the garbage to the sanitary landfill in Barangay Cabulihan, Malay, said Graf.

Meanwhile the local government waits for the management of the Balabag and Yapak MRFs to submit the requirements for reactivation, said Jose Macavinta, executive assistant for solid waste management.

In a recent meeting with Task Force Bantay Boracay, Gov. Florencio Miraflores urged Malay officials led by Mayor Ceciron Cawaling and the stakeholders to work together to solve the garbage problem in the island. (PNA)
