BACOLOD City – Three cities and two towns in Negros Occidental are expected to benefit from the Malogo River irrigation project.

The first phase of the irrigation project will start in the first quarter of this year.

It is expected to be completed by 2023, National Irrigation Administration’s Negros Occidental Irrigation Management Office acting head Lorena Sioco disclosed during a visit to Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. on Thursday.

Worth almost a billion pesos all in all – P934,000,000 – the project covers the cities of Silay, Talisay and Victorias, EB Magalona town and a portion of Manapla.

The first phase, which involves the construction of a diversion dam in Barangay Consing, EB Magalona, would cost P200 million, Sioco said.

Sioco said they were already organizing irrigators’ associations from the covered local governments.

Members of these organizations will be prioritized once the irrigation project becomes operational, she said.

Irrigation projects may be used for not only rice plantations but also sugarcane fields, said Sioco./PN
