BACOLOD City – A mass deworming in all barangays and public schools will be conducted, the City Health Office (CHO) announced.
For the city’s 61 barangays, the deworming commenced on Jan. 13 while for public elementary and high schools, it kicks off on Jan. 19.
Ma. Carmela Gensoli, head of the CHO, said the mass deworming aims to prevent and control soil-transmitted helminthiasis, lymphatic filariasis, and schistosomiasis among the vulnerable age groups.
It is part of the simultaneous National Mass Deworming Activity led by the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Education (DepEd), she added.
Children infested with parasites suffer from malnutrition and anemia, as among the common effects, Gensoli said.
Free deworming drugs will be given to children aged 12 to 59 months in the barangays and to those enrolled in private schools aged 5 to 18 years old.
Out-of-school youths can also avail themselves of free deworming.
Students from Grades 1 to 10 enrolled in public schools will be served in their respective campuses.
According to the DOH, routine deworming every six months will prevent the growth of these micro-organisms.
Gensoli said DOH has procured sufficient deworming drugs for the bi-annual campaign to ensure the provision of such every January and July to targeted group age.
A monitoring team has been assigned to ensure the efficient implementation of the program to prevent adverse effects of the mass drug administration, she added. (PNA)
